Abstract
The Dutch or wax lining process is discussed. The adhesive quality of the wax (breaking load) and melting point are examined for 21 wax and wax-resin adhesives. Atmospheric endurance was observed for a painting lined with formula #9. The lining process is considered in detail. Two lining adhesive mixtures are recommended. #9 Beeswax 50 grams; Resin 50 grams; Venice turpentine 1.5 grams. #13 Beeswax 40 grams; Parffin wax (M.P. 60°C) 30 grams; Resin 20 grams; Gum Elemi 10 grams. Addition of resins and balsams is said to increase the breaking load of wax adhesives at the expense of contributing to chemical instability. A possible solvent effect of essential oils, gum resins, and balsams on oil paint is mentioned.
