Abstract
Raman microscopy is a non-destructive molecular spectroscopy technique requiring only very small samples. Applications relevant to archaeology conservation include identification of chemical compounds (mineralogy) in small samples of minerals and inclusions within mineral grains and identification of pollutants. Natural and synthetic gems can be distinguished, both organic and inorganic pigments can be identified, and modern pigments can be separated from ancient ones.
