B. Ceram. R.A. has launched a multi-client, multi-national project to develop the application of CAD/CAM, already used in engineering, to the production of sanitaryware. For ceramics articles it is necessary to take into account shrinkage and distortion, and as a consequence to provide a feed-back mechanism to correct for their effects which are difficult to predict. The supplementary software to provide these facilities in a convenient form is being developed in parallel. From a number of possible systems DUCT was chosen as the basic engineering system. The economic advantages are seen as a reduction in the time required to bring new models on to the market and in the cost of doing this. It is intended to apply this technique to the production of tableware, industrial ceramics and to decoration.
