The rupture of the cellulose molecule being irreversible results in the unfortunate fact that paper deteriorated by hydrolysis beyond a certain point can only be salvaged by lamination. Lamination is a purely mechanical process to hold together brittle paper, and it should be reserved for strengthening documents which are beyond salvage by less drastic methods. Various types of lamination procedures are described.
