Bohemian Switzerland is the youngest national park in the Czech Republic and is the only one in the country that occupies an area built mostly of sedimentary rocks – Cretaceous quartz sandstones. These rocks provide a multitude of characteristic landforms. “Bohemian Switzerland” is a rugged sandstone country with plateaus and deep canyons, rock cities and labyrinths, rock walls, shelters, ledges, chimney rocks, rock windows and arches. Honeycombs, rock cavities and abundant pseudokarst karren belong to most frequent microforms. The sandstone relief is controlled by a number of factors including tectonic structures, lithologically conditioned selective weathering, exposure to climatic/microclimatic factors (moisture and the role of capillary water), and bioerosion. Two main antagonistic processes influenced the geomorphic history of this area: surface hardening (rock crusts mostly caused by silica and ferruginous impregnation) and salt weathering.
