Abstract
Four different building stones (3 types of sandstone and one marlstone) were tested using 6 and 12 month exposure trials to assess their suitability as environmental sensors at St. Vitus Cathedral, Prague (Czech Republic). The changes in mass, and salt content (sulphates, nitrates and chlorides) contents after exposure were evaluated. Concerning weight loss, entirely opposite behaviour of quartz sandstone from Msene (M) and marlstone from Predni Kipanina (PK) was observed. Weathering of PK, monitored by the weight loss of exposed samples, started later (after six months) than the weathering of M, but it was more intensive after one year of exposure. Regarding salt content – sulphates are dominant neo-formed phases. The content of nitrates and chlorides does not show any noticeable trend.
