Abstract
The process of tanning, the conversion of raw skin to leather, has to be done with the end-product in mind. The preparation of skin for tanning is described. Specific tanning procedures are briefly discussed: chamois dressing, vegetable tanning, alum tanning, chrome tanning. The preparation of bookbinding leather, leather dyeing, and manufacture and use of vellum are also described.
