The Ethnographic Museum in Vienna houses a great part of the collections of explorer James Cook. There are 58 Oceanic barkbast cloths with geometric painted patterns. Precise documentation of technique, material, and alterations is given. Restoration consisted mainly of cleaning with distilled water and acidity control. Tears and gaps were subsequently closed using methyl cellulose with thymol at pH 8 and tea-colored Japanese paper pulp. Finally the problems of climate and storage for these sensitive fiber materials are discussed. Storage in acid free cardboard tubes 20 centimeters in diameter for the larger pieces, together with neutral tissue paper for dust protection is proposed. -- AATA
