MCI’s biodeterioration group uses environmentally safe techniques to solve biodeterioration problems on cultural heritage, including buildings and monuments. MCI continued its research into disfiguring staining on Smithsonian buildings and structures. In 2016, MCI organized, with the Smithsonian Grand Challenges Consortia, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the Research Councils UK in the US, and the British Embassy, and hosted Managing Cultural Heritage in a Climate Change(d) Future. The workshop and panel discussion aimed to identify the key challenges of sustainable heritage management in changing times. More importantly, it explored how the arts and humanities and the sciences can learn from each other and collaborate to define new areas of research and new solutions.
