Anoxic and hypoxic encasements have been a topic of discussion in art conservation for many years, but until recently there was not a singular resource that compiled references, case-studies, and an overall decision-making framework for the topic. Colleagues from the Library of Congress (LoC), National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), and the Smithsonian (Museum Conservation Institute and the National Museum of African American History and Culture) pooled their collective expertise to draft two white papers on the topic of anoxic encasements. The following white papers: “Is An Encasement Project Right for This Object” and “Trajectory of Anoxic Encasements in Museum Use” are available as pdf downloads for your reference.
